Three new investments - Meta Platforms, Paypal and Gigaset

Posted on February 04, 2022

On Feb 4, 2022, I invested in Meta Platforms (Facebook) at a price of USD234 per share. This was after the stock price had fallen by 26.26% from the previous day. Do I envision myself traversing the Metaverse in Oculus goggles anytime soon? Not necessarily. But investing in Meta Platforms at this point is akin to investing in a foundational blockchain project. It represents a leap into a new digital frontier – much like blockchain-based Decentraland is pioneering a new form of reality. Meta's mission is to "Give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together." This sentiment mirrors the underlying ethos of the blockchain movement, which is all about decentralized and community-based platforms. While I might not know exactly how the Metaverse will shape up, I see the value in being part of its early growth – a similar mindset I have towards emerging blockchain projects.

As a regular user of Paypal, I bought the company's shares at USD125 each. This purchase occurred after the stock had dropped 59.14% from its all-time high in July of the previous year. In the blockchain space, this would be similar to buying into Ethereum during a market downturn. Ethereum, like Paypal, facilitates transactions across borders – but it also serves as the foundational layer for various decentralized applications. While I'm not transacting in cryptocurrencies as of yet, the philosophy of supporting utilities I personally benefit from remains consistent.

Finally, I have placed an order for shares in Gigaset, a Telephone and Communications company, waiting for the trade to be confirmed. If I were to draw a parallel in the blockchain world, this would be similar to investing in a smaller, yet promising project in the blockchain communication space.

I'm confident that my investments, whether in traditional companies or hypothetical blockchain assets, will compound over time due to my long-term investment horizon of 5-10 years. These investments represent about 10% of my monthly income, demonstrating a cautious yet optimistic approach towards the future – a mindset that's vital in both traditional and blockchain investing.
